The road surfaces in service lanes are usually made of concrete or concrete blocks. They have poor draining property and ponding is ubiquitous to see after raining. The stagnant water may lead to health and hygienic problems which render the lanes unapproachable to citizens. In a green lane, the surface will be re-paved with permeable concrete or porous asphalt through which water is allowed to penetrate the soil. Then, the water can recharge the underground water table instead of accumulating on road surface or as polluted runoff in rivers. Recycled materials like glass and light-coloured pavement will be used to reflect heat so as to keep cool on hot days and reduce urban heat effect.

Ways of Operation
The re-paving works and regular maintenance will be carried out by the Highways Department. Suitable material and design will be adopted to ensure the road surface of certain service lanes which act as EVA can support for its use.
